Umbrellas are meant to cover and protect noble people, and the umbrella itself symbolizes wealth. Flower umbrellas were thought to attract divine spirits. There is also an event to attract evil spirits to flower umbrellas and throw them away with the umbrella to drive them away. Hanagasa festivals are still held all over Japan.
